Avalanche deaths are more common in the backcountry

John Gifford, general manager at the Stevens Pass Burberry scarves ski area, says he's unsure how many people were caught up in the slide, or whether there were additional injuries. But he said the death toll remains at three.

The King County Sheriff's Office earlier said as many as eight people were missing after the avalanche.

Gifford had said, acording to CBS affiliate KIRO, that a group of five people were skiing in the back country, out of bounds.

Sgt. Cindi West said her office began receiving word about the slide just after noon. Stevens Pass is in the Cascade Mountains, about 80 miles northeast of Seattle.

The avalanche occurred in an out-of-bounds area on the back side of the resort.

The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center on Sunday issued a warning for high avalanche danger for areas above 5,000 feet, saying warmer weather could loosen surface snow and trigger a slide on steeper slopes. The elevation of the avalanche wasn't immediately clear.

At mid-afternoon, the temperate at the base of the ski resort was 24 degrees, with light winds and good visibility. The temperature at the top of the mountain was 22 degrees, according to the resort's website.

John Gifford, the ski area's general manager, said the resort has received 19 inches of snow in the past 24 hours. However, he said it wasn't snowing there Sunday Burberry belts cheap afternoon, and he had no details about the slide.

Stevens Pass is one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state, with visitors flocking there to go cross-country, back-country and downhill skiing, as well as snowshoeing and backpacking.

It's been a deadly winter in Washington's mountains. Four people disappeared in vicious storms while camping and climbing on Mount Rainier last month. The four remain missing, and authorities have said they're hoping to find their bodies when the snow melts this summer.

Across the West, there had been 13 avalanche deaths this season as of Feb. 16, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which tracks avalanche deaths in the U.S.

Experts have said the risk of additional slides could remain high all season. They attribute the dangers in part to a weak base layer of snow caused by a dry winter.

Avalanche deaths are more common in the backcountry than at ski resorts. Out of about 900 avalanche deaths nationwide since the winter of 1950-51, 32 were within terrain that was open for riding at ski resorts, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.

Also Sunday, West said a snowboarder was killed cheap burberry scarves in a separate incident at the Alpental ski area east of Seattle. The snowboarder went over a cliff. No other details were available.

The goal is to take advantage of the scientific

Ms. Clinton stated at the State Department Thursday that climate change is a leading health problem facing all countries around the world.

“Millions die annually from constantly burberry jeans breathing in black carbon soot that comes from cookstoves in their own homes, from diesel cars and trucks on their roads, from the open burning of agricultural waste in their fields,” said Ms. Clinton.

The goal is to take advantage of the scientific research amassed by the United Nations Environment Program and scientists around the world that shows that some of these pollutants can be captured and used for clean energy sources.

The former first lady made the announcement Thursday at the State Department, with representatives from countries that will be the first to take part in the new coalition.

There were reps from Mexico, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, and Sweden, and the U.S. hopes to attract more countries in the future.

The U.S. and Canada have already pledged $15 million towards the new global initiative over the next two years.

Those investments will be used to help nations implement environmentally sound practices such as lowering their emissions of diesel exhaust and capture methane, among other actions.

“This coalition allows us to build on efforts that are already in place. For example, we’ve worked through voluntarily – voluntary partnerships like the SmartWay Partnership and the National Clean Diesel Campaign here at home to help make engines on our roads cleaner,” said EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

One of the roles of the new Climate and Clean Air Coalition will be to spread practical ideas for that the international community can contribute to the goal of preventing climate change.

Methane, soot and hydrofluorocarbons are believed to be the three leading short lived pollutants currently contributing to carbon dioxide.

Some of the common sources that emit methane include landfills, coal mines, rice paddies and more.

The coalition’s goal is to prevent global temperatures from rising by one half of a degree by the year 2050, and to reduce occurrences of lung and heart disease arising from short lived pollutants in the atmosphere.

“The nations represented here today have made strong progress, and I’m pleased that the international community took steps in the right direction at the climate conference in Durban,” said Ms. Clinton.

The United Nations recently agreed to form a global climate change treaty by 2015, at the “conference in Durban” that Ms. Clinton is referring to.

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition is a move towards speeding up the process of finding more solutions to prevent climate change, as scientists believe that irreversible atmosphere damage could occur prior to 2015, The New York Times reports.

Recent studies show that air pollutants in some areas of the world are more deadly than they are in other areas.

Air pollution in South Asia accounts for more than 500,000 premature deaths annually, according to Hasan Mahmund, Bangladesh State Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The U.S. and the other countries represented burberry shirts for women at the State Department event Thursday will look to continue to expand the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to all corners of the globe in the near future.

He got to play most of his first round at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club after the worst of some fierce winds had calmed down and sneaked in a birdie at the 18th hole by chipping in from 35 feet just before it was too dark to play anymore.

For his efforts, Mickelson owns a one-shot lead after his five-under par 66 and all the momentum there is to have in golf.

Last Sunday, Mickelson routed Tiger Woods by 11 strokes on the final day at Pebble Beach when the two ended up in the second-to-last group. Mickelson also won the tournament and is trying, for the fourth time in his career, to win in consecutive weeks.

"It was a challenging day today," Mickelson said. "Fortunately, the greens were somewhat receptive …so even though the wind was challenging, it was still a fair test."

Mickelson, who has won the last five times he held part of a first-round lead in a PGA Tour event, is a shot in front of Hunter Mahan and J.B. Holmes, who each shot 67s.

Play was suspended at 5:42 p.m. because of darkness with 30 golfers still on the course. That included Troy Matteson and former champion Rory Sabbatini, who were among a group of eight tied for sixth place at two under.

Also in that group was Spain's Sergio Garcia, who had a loud and enthusiastic following. Garcia, who hasn't won a PGA Tour event since the 2008 Players Championship, finished his two-under round of 69.

Many players spoke about the ferocious winds that changed trajectories and made golf balls do the jitterbug even on the greens through much of the day.

Luke Donald, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, shot a 70, played early and said, "This morning it was freezing, blowing a gale and it was not easy."

K.J. Choi, who is in the group at 69, said, "I woke in the morning at 4:30 a.m. and outside the window there were palm trees like this." Choi did a bending motion with his arms to indicate how the palm trees were leaning.

Mahan, who said "the wind was humming pretty good" when he woke up Thursday, said it was fortunate that the course was in "perfect shape." He said the wind had calmed down during his final seven holes, which, for Mahan, were the final seven holes of the front nine.

But it was Mickelson who was the star.

He said he thought he had earned a little luck with the chip-in on the 18th hole because he should have done better on the two previous holes. Mickelson bogeyed the par-three 16th and missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-five 17th.

"It wasn't one I was trying to make," Mickelson coats for women 2012 said of his final stroke of the day. "It was quick, it was downhill and I had to play four or five feet of break, so it's not one that you're trying to get aggressive with. I was trying to get good speed…I got fortunate that it went in."

Even with the national Do Not Call Registry in effect

After receiving thousands of complaints from consumers, the Federal Communications Commission clamped down Wednesday on unwanted robo-calling by burberry jeans approving sweeping changes to its telemarketing rules for wireline and mobile phones.

Even with the national Do Not Call Registry in effect — the initial effort to block those pesky calls — telemarketers have found ways around the rules. But the FCC's latest effort is "closing a loophole," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center.

"This is an important step forward to make it easier for consumers to take advantage of the Do Not Call list," Rotenberg said about the FCC's changes. "These are additional safeguards to provide consumers greater protection."

Telemarketing calls have a bigger effect on mobile phones, he noted, because those calls can eat up the minutes in consumers' wireless plans.

Under the new FCC rules, telemarketers are required to obtain written consent, which can be in the form of an online approval, before placing autodialed or prerecorded calls to a consumer.

Telemarketers also must provide an automated opt-out mechanism during each robo-call so that consumers can immediately tell the telemarketer to stop calling.

The FCC also eliminated the "established burberry shirts for women business relationship" exception, which had allowed robo-calls to be placed to the land-line home phones of consumers with "prior or existing" associations with companies represented by telemarketers.

And the agency strictly limited the number of abandoned or so-called dead-air calls — in which consumers answer their phones and hear nothing — that telemarketers can make within each calling campaign.

The FCC's new rules, which will go into effect in the coming months, also apply to text messages. The FCC said it modified its rules to be more consistent with the Federal Trade Commission's telemarketing rules, which cover fewer telemarketers.

The new rules are aimed at giving consumers more control over who can call them, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said. Congress and his agency have long recognized the need for consumers to have control over the telemarketing calls that come into their phones, but existing rules weren't effective enough, he said.

"Despite these clear ground rules, too many telemarketers, aided by auto-dialers and prerecorded messages, have continued to call consumers who don't want to hear from them," Genachowski said. Telephone and cellphone customers "remain unhappy with having their privacy invaded and their time wasted by these unwanted calls."

The FCC's changes still permit coats for women 2012 informational calls, such as those related to school closings and flight changes. Charities and political organizations are also exempt.

A final measure should be ready for a vote in the House on Friday

The substance of most issues, including how to pay for the unemployment benefits and doctors’ fees, had largely been worked out by Wednesday night. But Burberry belts cheap lawmakers continued to debate whether a pay freeze for federal workers or a reduction in scheduled raises would be more acceptable to some Democrats than changes to those workers’ pensions as a way to pay for the continuation of jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.

While the committee’s work has the blessing of House Republican leadership, many rank-and-file Republicans, while cheered by a reduction in unemployment benefits and proposed erosion of the health care law, were nonetheless leaning against the deal.

“They are framing it as a middle-class tax cut even though this is a significant change to how Social Security has traditionally been treated,” said Representative Jeff Fortenberry, Republican of Nebraska, who plans to oppose the measure. “The payroll tax keeps Americans attentive to the fact that they put a little bit aside each check for Social Security. That connection is now gone.”

A final measure should be ready for a vote in the House on Friday, but the timing of a Senate vote seemed less certain.

Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, has held up Senate votes this week in protest of a decision by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, to deny Mr. Paul other legislation that would strip Egypt of foreign aid for 30 days as punishment for detaining American pro-democracy workers.

Under the agreement reached by House and Senate negotiators, the current reduction in the employee’s share of the Social Security payroll tax — to 4.2 percent of wages, from 6.2 percent — would be continued to the end of the year. Revenue lost to the Social Security trust fund would be fully replaced with money from the general fund of the Treasury.

For a worker with annual earnings of $50,000, the payroll tax holiday would increase take-home pay by $1,000 over the course of the year.

The bipartisan agreement also revamps unemployment insurance, reducing the maximum duration of benefits in states with high unemployment to 73 weeks, from the current 99. Currently, fewer than half of states are eligible for 93 weeks or more of unemployment insurance, with just 18 states getting the full maximum of 99 weeks.Burberry ties, Burberry belts, Burberry scarves 2012 new arrivals.

This satisfied members from both parties, though some Democrats were disappointed they did not get more weeks. The roughly $30 billion price will be picked up by the sale of radio spectrum licenses and the federal worker benefit changes.

Under the agreement, states will be allowed to conduct drug testing for anyone who lost a job because the person failed or refused to take an employer’s drug test, and they could test anyone seeking a job that generally requires such a test, a provision similar to existing law. Further, some states would now be eligible to emulate a Georgia program that provides a stipend and workers’ compensation coverage for the unemployed in exchange for job training.

Federal workers were not pleased with the proposed changes to their pension program. Colleen M. Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said House and Senate negotiators were tentatively planning to save $15 billion over 10 years by reducing the government contribution to federal employee pensions and requiring the workers to contribute more.

“It is absolutely outrageous that federal employees, already sacrificing $60 billion through a two-year pay freeze, would be hit again,” Ms. Kelley said.

The agreement extends the nation’s main welfare program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, through the current fiscal year. States will have to prevent welfare recipients from using electronic benefit cards at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs. In addition, the legislation blocks a 27 percent cut in payments to doctors treating Medicare patients. In effect, this assures that beneficiaries will have access to their doctors after March 1, when the cut was to have taken effect.

Dr. Peter W. Carmel, president of the American Medical Association, said his group was “deeply disappointed” that the agreement, while delaying the cut for 10 months, did not replace the statutory formula that requires such cuts. Republicans boasted that they had cut spending under the new health care law to help pay for Medicare spending under the agreement. For example, the agreement cuts $5 billion from a special account created by the new law to promote public health and prevent chronic diseases.

Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of Iowa and chairman of the Senate health committee, called the cut in preventive health programs “extremely shortsighted and fiscally irresponsible.”

To help offset the cost of paying doctors Burberry belts under Medicare, the agreement will reduce payments to hospitals. The legislation cuts Medicaid payments to hospitals that serve disproportionate numbers of low-income patients. And it cuts Medicare payments to hospitals for bad debts that result when beneficiaries fail to pay deductibles and co-payments.

Manning certainly isn’t above a little politics

“He’s a politician,” Jim Irsay sneered about Peyton Manning last month, a rather spiteful line about a quarterback who had made the Indianapolis burberry belt Colts matter in the first place.

It was just one round in what’s become an endless back and forth political battle between franchise owner and franchise quarterback over the support of the franchise’s fans.

Manning certainly isn’t above a little politics, but it’s the holier-than-thou Irsay who keeps taking it to new levels. Tuesday he spoke out in another series of unnecessary media interviews that tried to lay the decision on whether Manning ever again plays for Indy on the player.

“It’s going to be Peyton’s call,” Irsay told ESPN.

Sure, Peyton’s call to agree to Irsay’s renegotiated contract demands.

There is no telling if any Colts fans fell for it. They shouldn’t have. What seems clearer is this: Why at this stage of this crude, clumsy campaign should Peyton Manning trust Jim Irsay?

Let’s recap this ridiculousness, which serves as the latest proof that almost no one is immune from ugly breakups in the National Football League:

Manning missed the 2011 season with a neck injury and continues to rehab with the intent of continuing his career. The Colts, however, have to make a decision on March 8 whether to keep or cut the 35-year-old, the specter of a $28 million payment clouding everything.

Manning, in January, told the Indianapolis Star that, “I don’t want to get into some kind of fan campaign with the owner, but I think it’s well-documented that I want to play in the same place my whole career.”

So, he was saying the decision is on Irsay, the first shot in what is, undoubtedly, a “fan campaign.”

[Related: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s salary draws ire]

Days later Irsay ripped Manning for being a politician (which Manning was) and reminding him that, “I think one thing that he’s always known, because he’s been around it so long, is you keep it in the family. If you’ve got a problem, you talk to each other. It’s not about campaigning or anything like that.”

Of course, Irsay was saying this in the media, which was most certainly outside the family.

Manning stood down, mostly, declaring at the Super burberry watches Bowl that there “was nothing to talk about” and promising a sit down with his boss. Of course, then a story leaked through ESPN that some doctors had cleared Manning to play. It was a report that almost everyone in football believes came from the Manning camp.

Irsay tossed out a late night/early morning tweet disputing the report. He stated Colts doctors hadn’t cleared Manning.

It would’ve all been deemed petty even if it hadn’t come on the weekend Indianapolis was hosting the Super Bowl.

Then, not a week and a half later and with no obvious reason to make any comment, Irsay pops up again and begins the politicking and talking “outside the family” all over again.

He’s everything he supposedly dislikes about Peyton Manning.

“We can make it work if he wants to be here,” Irsay told the Indianapolis Star on Tuesday. “We’d be excited to have him back and finish his career with us.”

Translation for, ” … if he wants to be here”? If Manning is willing to renegotiate his contract that still owes him $90 million? Irsay would want something that speaks to the uncertainty of Manning’s neck, likely heavy with incentives.

That’s all well and good and fair, and there is little doubt that he could’ve told Manning that face-to-face and not through the media. He chose not to, though. It’s better to play the greedy-athlete bit on the public.

Irsay and Manning both know this deal is done. The Colts have cleaned house of the Manning era – general manager, president, head coach, a slew of assistants and even a strength and conditioning coach have all been jettisoned. Manning is next. Neither wants to take the blame. And it stands to reason that, if healthy and given his starting job, Manning doesn’t want to leave. There was a high road here. There was a smart road here. Manning has, at the very least, flirted with it. Once provoked, Irsay has avoided it at all costs.

In a sane situation everyone would’ve shut up and let Manning continue his rehab. Who knows, perhaps he is making significant gains. If so, he could possibly be in very promising shape by the first week of March, even cleared to play by the Colts’ own doctors. Then the Colts would have an interesting decision to make.

A healthy Manning is one of the cheap burberry coats for little boys 2012 online two best quarterbacks in the league. You just dump that? Why would Jim Irsay go through all this talk, all this public negotiating weeks and months before he has to make a final decision, one that should be made with the most accurate and up-to-date medical information?

Is winning in the court of public opinion that important?

Manning isn’t entirely innocent here, but he has every right to be frustrated. His owner isn’t waiting this out. His owner isn’t adhering to the same code he once scolded Peyton for violating. His owner is a politician in every sense of the word.

Manning made the Indianapolis Colts a franchise. Manning delivered four MVPs, 11 playoff appearances, one Super Bowl and so many sellouts and positive economic impact on Indy that Irsay even got a new and more opulent stadium.

Manning is the central figure in turning Indianapolis into a football town, in essentially bailing out the controversial move by Irsay’s father to move from Baltimore in the first place.

Through it all he played and played, won and won, never asked to renegotiate a contract, even offered up this current out clause to the Colts as a sign of openness about the injury. Did Irsay pay Peyton a lot of money though the years? You bet he did.

But it’s not nearly as much as Peyton earned Irsay.

The two are supposed to meet in the next week or so. The Colts have every right to change direction, start anew.

If Irsay has made up his mind to do just that – which cheap burberry grey coats long style for kids outlet 2012 his actions intimate – then Manning deserved to hear it face-to-face, man-to-man, right there inside the family that Irsay supposedly places so much value on.

Sometimes, though, politicians just can’t help themselves.

Romney’s status in the race was shaken

Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum has overtaken Mitt Romney in the battle for the party’s nomination, according to a Pew Research Center poll burberry shoes for men that also shows both losing to President Barack Obama in hypothetical matchups.

Santorum drew the backing of 30 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters in the Feb. 8-12 poll, while Romney got 28 percent, Pew said on its website. Obama held a 10 percentage point lead over Santorum and 8 points over Romney among a survey of all registered voters, Washington-based Pew said.

Romney’s status in the race was shaken when Santorum won all three contests on Feb. 7 -- in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

Last night, Romney told a rally of more than 2,400 in an outdoor amphitheater in Mesa, Arizona, that his experience as a businessman, governor of Massachusetts and running the 2002 Winter Olympics makes him best qualified to be president. “Let’s not nominate someone who hasn’t run anything and hasn’t been a leader,” he said.

Santorum said over the weekend that Romney has become “desperate” in trying to attack Santorum’s conservative credentials. “You reach a point where desperate people do desperate things,” he said. “He’s having trouble finding out how to go after someone who is a solid conservative, who’s got a great track record of attracting independents and Democrats and winning states as a conservative,” Santorum said in an interview on ABC Television’s “This Week.”

Washington State

Yesterday, the Romney campaign organized supporters in Washington state to tout their candidate and his Feb. 11 win in Maine’s caucuses, while Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, campaigned in the state in the far Northwest.

“There’s a lot of campaign momentum,” said Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a U.S. representative who is Romney’s campaign chairwoman in Washington state, during a conference call burberry shoes for women for reporters. “There’s no question in my mind that he’s the most electable of the Republican candidates.”

The next primaries, on Feb. 28, are in Arizona and Michigan.

Santorum and onetime U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich have been vying for weeks to become the chief alternative to Romney and unite the conservative Republican activists who haven’t warmed to Romney’s candidacy. Yesterday, National Review Online suggested Gingrich should step aside.

‘Proper Course’

“When he led Santorum in the polls, he urged the Pennsylvanian to leave the race,” the publication said in an editorial on its website. “On his own arguments, the proper course for him now is to endorse Santorum and exit.”

The National Review in December warned Republicans against nominating Gingrich, saying he might ruin the opportunity to win the White House. Yesterday, the publication said, “It would be a grave mistake for the party to make someone with such poor judgment and persistent unpopularity its presidential nominee.”

In the Pew Poll, Gingrich drew the support of 17 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters, while U.S. Representative Ron Paul of Texas got the backing of 12 percent.

Support for Romney and Gingrich in the Republican race is burberry green ties virtually the same as recorded in a Jan. 4-8 national Pew poll. The backing for Santorum has almost doubled.

Obama Matchups

In the matchups with Obama, the president led Romney 52 percent to 44 percent among all registered voters and ran ahead of Santorum 53 percent to 43 percent. Obama topped Gingrich 57 percent to 39 percent.

The poll’s margin of error in its survey of Republican and Republican-leaning voters is plus-or-minus 5 percentage points; for all registered voters, it is 3.5 points.

While Romney has struggled to unite the party behind his candidacy, he scored a victory over the weekend in a straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference, a group of activists who oppose government spending, abortion rights and gay marriage.

Santorum, who has a record of working against abortion rights, downplayed the CPAC straw poll’s importance, saying Paul had won it in the past by paying for participants’ tickets. He declined to say whether the Romney campaign had rigged this year’s contest when asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” program.

Ticket Question

“You have to talk to the Romney campaign and how many tickets they bought,” he said. “We’ve heard all sorts of things.”

Santorum has “a history of making statements that aren’t grounded in the truth,” Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, said in an e-mail. “Mitt Romney won the CPAC straw poll.”

In a Feb. 10 speech at the CPAC gathering, Romney termed himself “severely conservative” during his governorship as he sought support from his audience.

The Pew poll shows that, among his party’s electorate, burberry purple ties those viewing him as a “strong conservative” has dipped to 42 percent from 53 percent in a November survey.

Santorum said he’s in a strong position heading into the primaries in Arizona and Michigan, where Romney’s father, George Romney, was governor. Santorum’s wins last week underscore his potential strength in the Midwest and Mountain West, particularly in areas with large blue-collar populations.
