To quote that noted basketball guru

“Everybody tells me I can make millions, but money isn’t everything,” Griner, a junior, said Monday. “Money doesn’t buy happiness louis vuitton shoes. And I made a commitment. When I make a commitment, I keep my word. And these are your best years, in college. I’m just trying to have my full experience. It was never tempting. I never really even had to think or debate about it.”

If this were men’s college basketball, the temptation would have been far greater, probably irresistible. Griner would probably have long jumped louis vuitton outlet to the N.B.A. Or she would be leaving shortly after she won a national championship, as Baylor (39-0) is heavily favored to do Tuesday night against Notre Dame.

To quote that noted basketball guru, Cyndi Lauper, money changes everything.

Anthony Davis, the Kentucky freshman and national men’s player of the year, stands to make up to $5.1 million if he jumps to the N.B.A. as expected and is the first player drafted. Griner, the national women’s player of the year, would make 100 times less than that, or $47,589, as the top pick in this month’s W.N.B.A. draft.

Still, Griner, a 6-foot-8 center, could make an additional $500,000 to $1.2 million playing professionally in Russia, Turkey or China, as a number of professionals do with dual careers. Commercial endorsements could also bring in $100,000 to $200,000, marketing experts said. It’s not N.B.A. money, but it dwarfs the starting salary of the average college student entering the workplace beats by dre studio.

The smart choice, many experts in professional basketball believe, is for Griner to leave college now. The sooner she starts earning money, the more she can earn in the long run. The risk of staying at Baylor is that Griner could be injured at any moment. And she would miss out on any marketing deals affiliated with the London Olympics. She is expected to be named to the United States national team shortly.

Griner has said that the money can wait. But she and women’s college basketball find themselves in a complicated, conflicted situation.

On one hand, Griner is the face of the sport, an innovator with her dunking and blocking skills and her 88-inch wingspan. She is the only player whom a casual fan could probably name. She fills the arena at Baylor. And ESPN has built its N.C.A.A. tournament coverage around her. For all of this, Griner is not allowed to receive a dime.

On the other hand, women’s college basketball still struggle monster beats to attract a widespread audience three decades after the N.C.A.A. tournament began in 1982. It benefits enormously from having Griner and other stars stay for four years.

Women’s coaches do not lose their best players each season. Fans get to know the stars from freshmen through senior years. Teams mature, and the best of them can usually be found playing for the national championship. Female players get their degrees in higher numbers than male players cheap Louis Vuitton bags.

Muffet McGraw, the Notre Dame coach, said she liked the restrictions of W.N.B.A. eligibility. The league requires that players stay four years in college or turn 22 the year they leave. Griner will be 22 in October.

“I think getting your education is the reason you go to college,” McGraw said. “I think you want to come out with that degree, so after your career ends at the old age of 30, you’re ready to go into the world and do something else Louis Vuitton replica.”

Geno Auriemma, the Connecticut coach, said he had mixed feelings about the W.N.B.A. rule. He said he disliked the “drive-by” nature of men’s basketball, where the top stars often leave after a season.
