Seger gets songwriting honor

Rock legend Bob Seger is heading into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, organizers announced Tuesday.

The Michigan artist, who has composed hits like "Against the Wind," "Turn the Page," "Night Moves" and "Hollywood Nights," will be honored along with Gordon Lightfoot, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones, and Jim Steinman at the organization's annual induction dinner June 14 in New York City.

Seger, who toured last year and released greatest hits compilation "Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets," told Rolling Stone last week that he's hoping burberry bags to have his first studio record since 2006's "Face the Music" out by Sept. 24.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969. Some of the other Michigan artists enshrined there include Smokey Robinson and Holland-Dozier-Holland (the Detroit-bred songwriting and production team made up of Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian Holland and Edward Holland Jr.).

In keeping with his wishes, no memorial service is planned for MC5 bassist Michael Davis, who died Friday in Chico, Calif., at the age of 68. He had been in the hospital for a month undergoing treatment for liver disease.

Davis had requested that his body be cremated and that his family someday mix the ashes with those of his surviving wife, Angela Davis. She said Tuesday her late husband didn't like the idea of a funeral.

"He thought a spirit should fly free, not have people trying to hold onto it," she said.

Michael Davis was a Detroit native and a member of the MC5 during the influential band's heyday in the late '60s and early '70s.

Angela Davis said she expects a celebration of his burberry sunglasses life and music to be scheduled at some point in Detroit, "the city that meant so much to him."
